A little while ago, a reader asked us for some gifting inspiration for the daughter of a friend, who just got her period for the first time. I thought this was such a very sweet and special idea! It’s also quite relevant for me, as Sara just turned 12, and it won’t be long for her… I can just see her body changing before my eyes. She’s really blooming!
We brainstormed some ideas as a team (the daughter of one of our team members also just had her first period, so she offered some great suggestions), and this is what we came up with:
If you have any ideas to add to this list, we would all love to know! Better make the most of the little nuisances of life. ; )

Hello!
I think this is a lovely idea. I remember feeling a bit ashamed about getting my period so anything that marks it as something special is to be encouraged! Perhaps a mother daughter date – doesn’t need to be a massive deal but just an hour or two together doing something the daughter loves doing might be nice. I think it’s lovely to mark this rite of passage.
That is such a sweet idea; creating a memory together!! ✨
Beautiful idea. Love this. When I got mine, my mother said ‘go and ask your sister’ and went back to reading the paper 😔
This still makes me feel sad to this day . I hope my girls feel loved and special at every stage in their life. Thanks
For sharing. (Oh and love the pouch!!!)
I didn’t have a sister, but it was surely something that was kept secret and was all approached in a slightly embarrassing way. I agree it should be a special, memorable moment! xx
This might be the sweetest round-up I’ve ever seen pertaining to starting one’s period – Bravo Esther! I also highly recommend this book, published by American Girl. I found it matter-of-fact and in a format that is easy for mothers and daughters to read together. We are on the cusp of young-womanhood here at our house too and I’ve appreciated having this book as a resource. https://www.amazon.com/Care-Keeping-You-Younger-Revised/dp/1609580834
Thank you Annie!! Will order your recommendation for Sara. xx
The Agony of Alice is also a wonderful coming of age story. I remember reading it as a 11-12 year old and just loving it!

Thanks for the tip! x
Lovely ideas.
I hope by the time the younger generation start having periods, re-usable cups become more mainstream as an alternative to pads/tampons. Having only discovered them in my 30s, they are revolutionary! I wish I had one a teenager.
I’ve been wanting to try them!!! I detest the amount of waste and cost pads and tampons generate!
I’m so fed up with the waste of resources AND money spent on tampons and pads, plus the chemicals that end up in your body! I have been wanting to try one (but haven’t yet…) x
My mother congratulated me and gave me a family jewell and a stuffed animal, since I was already a woman and still a little girl.
I thought it was really sweet and later discover that my friends experience was nothing like that… It helped me to look at it in a positive way, since I had lots of cramps and didn’t want to grow up.
Now girls I know (I only have boys) are really happy when it happens and talk about it freely and much more secure about it, as it should be.
