I'm just back from Community Meeting at my children's school, which is a short weekly gathering of all the children in grades PreK-3 (so, ages 4 through 8 or 9 years old) and their parents. Typically at Community Meetings we sing together or listen to presentations from various classes on their studies, but the theme of ...

Encouraging children to read! Here are ten tips.
Both my oldest children are avid readers. Especially Sara is the kind of person who reads everything she can get her hands on: novels, series, educational books, newspapers, magazines, the back of cereal boxes -- you name it. So recognisable: I was exactly the same as a child. (I always thought it had to do ...

A couple of months ago I was asked to become an ambassador for the Dutch agency against food waste (#verspillingsvrij). Which I was happy to accept -- food waste, after all, is one of the most serious dangers to the health of our planet. A third of all food is thrown away! A big part ...

Our children are really good at entertaining themselves at home, but it seems the minute we go away on a mini weekend break, or even for longer, they wake up earlier, with more energy and excitement! Maintaining your friendships -- how do you prioritise your friends?
A longtime reader (seven years she said!) recently sent an email asking for advice on maintaining friendships and making new ones.  She shared that she already feels pulled in so many directions (kids, husband, work, life in general!) and that she admittedly hasn't been able to focus on her own friendships. She wondered if we ...

Tuesday Tips: Singing in the loo -- create a sense of safety and security
I think a lot of parents are faced with this conundrum: a public loo, two (or more) children, and no room in the loo for the children, the buggy, and all your belongings! (Or something similar.) Sometimes there is the added details of suitcases/travelling alone/sleeping baby, but whatever the situation, it is one of those ...

Five simple tips for learning to tie shoelaces
It's funny how children are all so different. Wild Garlic, or Ramson, is abundant in early Spring. We have a simple pesto recipe in our bio which is great with pasta, on fish, or with a cheese toastie! And if you are wondering what’s so good about wild garlic, well, it’s great for you! It has antibacterial, antibiotic, antiseptic properties so it makes sense to pack as much into your diet as you can. It reduces blood pressure, heart disease and the risk of stroke. It’s also fun to forage. Recipe from @laraoflondon

How does your garden grow? Spring provides the perfect opportunity to embrace growing both flowers and vegetables with children. Whether you have a garden, window box space or a small ledge inside, children can learn so much from the experience of growing something themselves. It can really demonstrate to them exactly how the process of photosynthesis works as well as help with learning the cycle of how a little seed can flourish and then be used to create something delicious! Emma tells us how wonderful it is to grow ! “We love growing our own tomatoes and then enjoying tasty bruschettas and rich tomato sauces for both pasta and pizza. It is remarkably simple and the children absolutely love the process of watching the seeds grow. It also teaches them patience (whilst waiting for the tomatoes to grow), resilience (when things do not go quite as planned) and of course helps with embracing all nature has to offer.” Link in bio for her best tips. @the_flourisher_ #babyccinokids #babyccinoeats
