Memorizing Poetry, a lost art? Let's talk about the benefits.
I'm just back from Community Meeting at my children's school, which is a short weekly gathering of all the children in grades PreK-3 (so, ages 4 through 8 or 9 years old) and their parents. Typically at Community Meetings we sing together or listen to presentations from various classes on their studies, but the theme of ...

Why being kind makes you happier!
Earlier this week, Lara in London sent me this wonderful article in The Sydney Morning Herald (her husband worked on the studies involved at Kindness.org), and it really hit home with me. The article shows a link between kindness and happiness. Reading it, I was reminded of an analogy my friend, Jeremy, shared with me ...

Would you let your children get lost at night and let them find their own way back home?
Recently, an interesting article appeared in the New York Times, and so many of my friends and followers reached out to me about it. Is it true? Do you really do it? The topic of the article is about a particular 'game' we play in the Netherlands which is called 'dropping'. In a nutshell, children ...

Let experiences be! How playing back memories on a mobile phone can re-shape our memories.
A couple of weeks ago Lara sent me an interesting NY Times article: Is the immediate playback of events changing children's memories? It has definitely made me re-think the way I share photos and videos to my children. Don't get me wrong -- I don't think it's bad to let them watch videos of past events, ...

The power of women — an interesting article about female endurance
A few weeks ago, Tamar was telling me about an article he was reading in the newspaper. About a certain kind of super-marathons, where athletes run for days and days with hardly any sleep or rest. I had never heard of these kind of races, but when he mentioned that the article discussed the fact ...

When teens get upset -- how best to respond
My mom sent this New York Times article to me last week, and I found it both comforting and incredibly helpful. Reading it, I had one of these 'aha!' moments of parenting clarity. Thursday Thoughts: The benefits of boredom
I know we've touched on the topic of boredom in the past (in this post about after-school activities), but this new opinion piece on boredom in the New York Times really resonated with me and I thought it makes for an interesting discussion. The article touches on the fact that boredom spawns creativity and self-sufficiency, and ...

Simone Davies, Montessori teacher and writer of the new publication 'The Montessori Toddler', sees things in ...

In honour of World Mental Health Week we have a new book review. This beautiful book, Many Shapes of Clay : A Story of Healing is written and illustrated by Kenesha Sneed @tactilematter and it is an absolute treasure. It is a piece of art, every page filled with graphic shapes and sensitive lines to create the most thoughtful story on grief, loss, and celebration of diversity. It is perfect for any child (or parent) who wants to explore conversations on mental health, feelings, and especially those going through loss or big changes in life. After a pandemic year, which has affected many families personally with great loss, it has also brought large conversations in front of little people… perhaps earlier than many children would have faced these ideas. Thanks too for the book recommendation from the lovely and talented @latonyayvette who brought this to @laraoflondon ‘s attention! Link in bio on book. #worldmentalhealthweek #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthforkids #babyccinokids #babyccinoreads @prestel_publishing
