Oliver's Garage – Ice cream with Arne Jacobsen in Charlottenlund
Trailing up the coast north of Copenhagen are a string of four white, sandy, couldn't-be-anywhere-else beaches, accessed both by train and by bike. From south to north, Charlottenlund is the third of the four, and it's our favourite east-coast-of-Sjælland beach for the twin reasons that it hosts the super Nordic-looking søbad (sea bath) of minty green pontoons ...

Nyhavn – Exploring and photographing Copenhagen's prettiest canal
A little like the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty and Big Ben do for Paris, New York and London, when you say 'Copenhagen' to anyone – whether they've been here or not – a picture of Nyhavn jumps into their minds. Nyhavn – said 'Noo-hown' – deserves to be the poster place for the ...

Weekend Play – The 'Green Playground' at Øster Farimagsgades Skole
It's a fact little-known to Copenhagen's visitors that at weekends, the playgrounds of the city's public schools and børnehaver (pre-schools) are open for anyone to romp in. If the suns out (or if it's not, which in this Nordic city is a high possibility!) and the gates are open, they're yours for the taking. This ...

Souvenirs from Copenhagen – Airport Danish pastries from Lagkagehuset
When I travel to England (or to anywhere else in Europe for that matter) to see family and friends, I always leave the task of buying small gifts for the airport. Danish Strawberries and Podded Peas – Summer's sweetest natural snacks
Come June, there are two Danish snacks that it's imperative you know about as a visitor to Copenhagen: the Danish strawberry and the Danish podded pea. Copenhagen's Harbour Buses – Seeing the city from the water
When you're in Copenhagen, there's water, water, everywhere, and it follows that in this city, the connection to it is magnetic. Great efforts have been made to make the harbour clean enough to swim in, and there are bright orange ladders emerging from it everywhere, so that you can dive in where you like and ...

The Rundetårn – Up and down, round and round
There are few sights in Copenhagen that so comprehensively combine pluses as the Rundetårn, which can claim all at once to be central, weather-proof, view-filled, unusual, simple and cheap. Meaning ‘The Round Tower’, it is a cylindrical structure topped by a circular, ornately balustraded lookout platform, atop which sits an astrological observatory. The Rundetårn holds ...

The Changing of the Guard – A march at street level from Rosenborg Castle to Amalienborg Palace
One of the most 'hyggeligt' (cosy/charming) things about ambling through central Copenhagen at lunchtime, is that you're likely to encounter a group of Danish soldiers marching, upright and focused, right by you. Late morning, every day, they head from the Life Barracks at Rosenborg Castle, out of the gates on Gothersgade (at number 100), and ...

Superkilen – A designed urban space celebrating diversity
For true urban play, Superkilen is an inventively rendered park and community space that is deservedly held in high esteem by the design and architecture press. With diversity celebrated through its design and its use, it occupies a huge wedge-shaped piece of land between apartment buildings and busy streets around and between Nørrebrogade and Tagensvej. ...

Skydebanehaven – A 70-year-old secret playground for Copenhagen's children
If Vesterbrogade feels busier than most other parts of the city, that's because it is – and it's not just a feeling, it's a fact: this is the most densely populated area in the (albeit small) country of Denmark. Its streets edge the main train station, Københavens Hovedbanegård (Copenhagen's Central Station); it's where its red ...

Ry 70 – Vintage kimonos, handmade children's clothes and flea market finds in a tiny Østerbro shop
On the largely residential street of Ryesgade, is a little peach-pink shop of treasures, where you never quite know what you’re going to get. Souvenirs from Copenhagen – Vintage Danish blue plates
When we first moved to Copenhagen, I noticed many of our Danish friends had cool, eclectic crockery collections that were mixed and matched. I noticed that in among the latter, ...

Mini Me – Copenhagen's coolest kicks for kids
If Copenhagen has a particular destination ‘high street’ – not so much high street stores as delis, flower shops, bakeries and independent bookstores all beautifully wrapped in a local neighbourhood vibe – then Gammel Kongevej in Frederiksberg is it. This could, to Copenhageners, seem a little strange – because Frederiksberg is actually a municipality all ...

Nobis Hotel Copenhagen – Scandinavian splendour with a view of Tivoli
The Nobis Hotel Copenhagen is a beautiful contradiction. It’s housed in a palatially grand former music academy building on the corner of one of the city's busiest boulevards, yet is unstuffy and somehow very quiet. It’s decorated in a contemporary fashion, in blacks, greenish-blues and greys, yet somehow it's warm and inviting. It’s a luxury hotel, that ...

In honour of World Mental Health Week we have a new book review. This beautiful book, Many Shapes of Clay : A Story of Healing is written and illustrated by Kenesha Sneed @tactilematter and it is an absolute treasure. It is a piece of art, every page filled with graphic shapes and sensitive lines to create the most thoughtful story on grief, loss, and celebration of diversity. It is perfect for any child (or parent) who wants to explore conversations on mental health, feelings, and especially those going through loss or big changes in life. After a pandemic year, which has affected many families personally with great loss, it has also brought large conversations in front of little people… perhaps earlier than many children would have faced these ideas. Thanks too for the book recommendation from the lovely and talented @latonyayvette who brought this to @laraoflondon ‘s attention!
