Despaña Fine Foods and Tapas Café - Spanish food in Soho
I've said it before, but one of my very favorite aspects of city living is the preponderance of specialty stores for everything you can imagine -- entire stores devoted solely to ribbons, or pencils, or in the case of Despaña Fine Foods and Tapas Café in Soho, the authentic flavors of Spain. Our family loves ...

Insa - a modern Korean BBQ restaurant in Brooklyn
Not infrequently, it occurs to me that my children are experiencing a far different childhood growing up in Brooklyn than I did, being raised in a small town in a rural state. One area this certainly holds true is with food and restaurants, and so far I've loved taking advantage of New York's rich culinary ...

Pizza at Roberta's in Brooklyn
Ask ten New Yorkers where to find the best pizza and you're likely to receive ten different responses. New York is a serious pizza town, and opinions, like the styles of the pizzas themselves, vary. It might surprise some, then, that one of my very favorite pizza places isn't focused only on pizza, and may ...

Greecologies - a yogurt bar in Little Italy
It's not hard at all to find Greek yogurt in most groceries and bodegas in New York, but for something a bit more special and unique, Greecologies, a yogurt lab and café in Little Italy, provides a perfect place to stop for breakfast or a mid-day snack. The shop's signature offering is traditional small-batch Greek ...

VHH Foods -- an all-day eatery in Brooklyn
We returned to Brooklyn on Sunday after a week and a half away and faced sights familiar, I'm sure, to many families upon return from travel: an empty refrigerator, a mountain of luggage needing unpacking, and tired-looking faces all around. In the name of making sure everyone turned in for the night with full bellies ...

Il Laboratorio del Gelato
I've mentioned before that we're an ice cream-loving family, so much so that we've identified our go-to favorite ice cream spots in neighborhoods across the city for quick reference should we happen to be in the general vicinity. Il Laboratorio del Gelato tops that list when we happen to be on the Lower East Side or ...

High Street on Hudson
For those up and ready to hit the city early on a weekend morning, finding a good pastry and cup of coffee isn't a terribly tall order, but finding an excellent full breakfast can be a more difficult task than you might expect. Brunch at many of our favorite restaurants doesn't begin until 10:00 or ...

Cold Weather Favorites: Hot Chocolate
Cold weather wandering in New York often requires a stop for something warm to drink, and I'm especially partial to hot chocolate. Though most every coffee shop and café offers a cup in a pinch, below are three favorites where you'll find it's well worth walking a bit out of the way for a cup of rich, ...

Bakeri in Brooklyn
Bakeri is the kind of café I would visit daily if either of the two locations were a bit closer to my house: casual and welcoming, with an excellent selection of house-baked breads, good coffee, and an appealing menu of breakfast and lunch choices. That the light-filled space also the most dreamy wallpaper in all of New York ...

La Newyorkina
My husband passed his love of popsicles on to our daughter, and despite the arrival of cooler weather here in New York, they're both convinced it's very much still popsicle season. Our local coffee shop, along with nearly 30 other locations around the city, carries a small selection of the La Newyorkina paletas (Mexican ice popsicles made by ...

Sockerbit
We don't eat a lot of candy in our house (or at least not while our daughter is awake...shhh!), but I'll confess to having an abiding love for sour gummy candy. A small pouch of Sour Patch Kids can be picked up at any hour in any drug store or bodega, but a far better ...

Think of it as an epic picnic where you don't have to pack a single thing: Smorgasburg Sunday gathers together 75-100 food and drink vendors each week in the verdant setting of Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Stands with options that range from wood-oven fired pizza to Berliner Döner Kebab and lobster rolls to Filipino spring rolls ring a grassy ...

Dizengoff
There are times in New York when popular attractions or restaurants are worth braving the crowds, and Dizengoff, an Israeli-style hummusiya located in Chelsea Market, meets the criteria. Chelsea Market, one of New York's original indoor food halls, is still incredibly popular with both locals and tourists alike and on weekends its assortment of stores and ...

Burrow Patisserie
There is hidden and then there is hidden: I walked by Burrow on my way to and from work and while out and about for nearly a year before becoming aware of its existence. Grab a Quick Coffee
Over the last several years the coffee culture in New York has improved dramatically, and it's now possible to procure a serious cup of coffee in just about every neighborhood. Four & Twenty Blackbirds
The promise of pie can brighten even a dreary afternoon, and that's what brought us in out of the rain and cold yesterday. Four & Twenty Blackbirds, a pie and coffee shop located in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, makes old-fashioned pies, some in delightfully modern flavor combinations. With painted pressed tin walls and ceiling and comfortably-worn ...

OddFellows Ice Cream Co.
I would argue that while it's important to have a favorite ice cream place, it's perhaps even more important to have a favorite ice cream place in as many neighborhoods as possible. Weekend socializing, errands, and exploring often take us out of our immediate corner of the city, and I like feeling secure in my knowledge of where we might ...

Lower East Side food: Kossar's Bialys
Around the corner on Grand Street from The Pickle Guys is Kossar's, one of the last bialy stores left in New York. Bialys are baked not boiled, and have floury exteriors and ...

Lower East Side food: The Pickle Guys
Pickles may not come immediately to mind as an iconic New York food, but with as many as 80 pickle shops and carts crowding Essex Street and surrounding streets on the Lower East Side during the first half of the 20th century, pickles were an essential and familiar part of life for many tenement dwellers. ...

We want to continue the conversation from Earth Day last week as it’s important year round! Courtney’s new blog post shares a list of things they do as a family to help reduce their carbon footprint. “I am aware that I’m preaching to the converted, and that we’re all aware of the importance of lightening our footprint and saving our planet. I also know none of us are perfect when it comes to our efforts of minimising our impact on the planet — by simply being alive, we are leaving an impact. However, little by little we can do and learn and try harder. And most importantly, we can educate our kids along the way. This is not meant to be some sort of bragging list of the things we do, but more just to share some of the things we’ve learned. And I’m really hoping you’ll share with me the things you do in your own homes so that I can learn from you too.” So let’s hear your thoughts in our comments and help Mother Nature!
